CONSTANTINE:

Both of these books focus extensively on the topic of "Sex in World Religions" ("Sex in World Religions" is the subtitle of Rock Prophecy). Specifically, both books cite evidence to assert that leaders of the Christian Church have suppressed and concealed documents about the sexuality of Jesus, and that Church "Fathers" have edited the story of Jesus into a re-write designed to control women. Both books dwell on the cult of Emperor Constantine as the culprits who orchestrated this treachery.

DC 2003: Unfortunately for Constantine, a growing religious turmoil was gripping Rome. Three centuries after the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, Christ's followers had multiplied exponentially. Christians and pagans began warring, and the conflict grew to such proportions that it threatened to render Rome in two. Constantine decided something had to be done. In 325 A.D., he decided to unify Rome under a single religion. Christianity…Constantine was a very good businessman. He could see that Christianity was on the rise, and he simply backed the winning horse.

RP 1999: …as the new religion spread to large numbers of people, he saw an opportunity to gain influence over believers. Constantine had a plan: he plotted to co-opt the growing Christian religion and use it to rejuvenate his rule over what would become the Christian Roman Empire…Constantine aimed to upstage Paul altogether and give himself top billing as the 13th Apostle. It was a publicity stunt made in heaven…The Emperor had a plan to revive the crumbling Empire; he envisioned a Palestinian showplace, boasting monumental tourist attractions over the sites of Jesus' birth and death. Constantine oversaw the production of a Middle East theme park, a sort of Christian Disneyland. With his new religion and its attendant attractions, the Emperor shrewdly maneuvered to put his Empire back on the map. Through Jesus memorabilia, Jerusalem became the center of a happening Holyland, all according to the plan of an Emperor's Roman renewal project. A Bethlehem temple was erected to enshrine the Nativity site. A hundred Inns were built to house streams of vacationing pilgrims. Eusebius composed a theme song jingle, The Nicean Creed, which advertised the four key attractions built by Constantine in the Holyland Theme Park.

DC 2003: During this fusion of religions, Constantine needed to strengthen the new Christian tradition, and held a famous ecumenical gathering known as the Council of Nicea…the birthplace of the Nicene Creed. At this gathering…many aspects of Christianity were debated and voted upon: the date of Easter, the role of the bishops, the administration of sacraments, and, of course, the divinity of Jesus…until that moment in history, Jesus was viewed by His followers as a mortal prophet…a great and powerful man, but a man nonetheless. A mortal…Jesus' establishment as "the Son of God" was officially proposed and voted on by the Council of Nicea…A relatively close vote at that…Nonetheless, establishing Christ's divinity was critical to the further unification of the Roman Empire and to the new Vatican power base.

RP 1999: The Gnostics regarded Jesus as a spiritual being…this idea became central to Christian theology some two hundred years later - the question of how Christ could be simultaneously human and divine. In the fourth century at the Council of Nicea, Constantine and his bishops realized that the resolution of this dispute held the key to endless power for the ruling class and its Vatican. Rejecting the Gnostic view that Jesus was a spiritual being…the orthodox insisted that he, like the rest of humanity, was born, lived in a family...they even went so far as to insist that he rose bodily from the dead…With Christianity in those early centuries, what happened was a conflict between interpretations of Christ: either as an example of the mystery hero who dies to be resurrected, or, as the unique incarnation. That was the big argument between the Gnostics and the orthodox community…

DC 2003: By officially endorsing Jesus as the Son of God, Constantine turned Jesus into a deity who existed beyond the scope of the human world, an entity whose power was unchallengeable. This not only precluded further pagan challenges to Christianity, but now the followers of Christ were able to redeem themselves only via the established sacred channel: the Roman Catholic Church…It was all about power…Christ as Messiah was critical to the functioning of Church and state. Many scholars claim at the early Church literally stole Jesus from His original followers, hijacking His human message, shrouding it in an impenetrable cloak of divinity, and using it to expand their own power.

RP 1999: The argument concerned the precise nature of divinity…Theologians were interested in the nature of God, but Constantine was concerned with the extent of divinity…Constantine talked about the nature of power and where the demarcation was: power in heaven and power on Earth…Constantine was after something more than just abstract theology…He wants to be the main act on Earth, and that means cutting out all these little trickle downs of power and stuffing God clear up into heaven…There were many bishops at Nicea who would have died for the belief that Jesus had been a man and a god in one person on Earth, and that means that there could be other men who had become gods as well, and these could then be set up as opposition or as confusers to Constantine's supreme position of power…

DC 2003: …Constantine took advantage of Christ's substantial influence and importance. And in doing so, he shaped the face of Christianity as we know it today…Because Constantine upgraded Jesus' status almost four centuries after Jesus' death, thousands of documents already existed chronicling His life as a mortal man. To rewrite the history books, Constantine knew he would need a bold stroke…Constantine commissioned and financed a new Bible, which omitted those gospels that spoke of Christ's human traits and embellished those gospels that made Him godlike.

RP 1999: His whole Holyland plan revolved around a book that redefined Jesus in Emperor-friendly terms. Constantine's spin doctors were ordered to construct an official New Testament, spelled out along the lines that Irenaeus dictated long ago: all power to men, condemn all women and gays. A list of books that Eusebius approved were included in Constantine's new Bible of the Roman Empire.

DC 2003: The earlier gospels were outlawed, gathered up, and burned. Anyone who chose the forbidden gospels over Constantine's version was deemed a heretic. The word heretic derives from that moment in history. The Latin word haereticus means "choice." Those who "chose" the original history of Christ were the world's first heretics.

RP 1999: The story of Jesus was now finally revised. Anyone who disagreed was persecuted or killed…He drew up a list of the gospels that reflected his prejudices and declared that all other gospels were the work of "heretics" - a Greek word for "one who makes a choice." No "choices" were to be made under…his plan of propaganda.

DC 2003: Nothing in Christianity is original. The pre-Christian God Mithras - called the Son of God and the Light of the World - was born on December 25, died, was buried in a rock tomb, and then resurrected in three days. By the way, December 25 is also the birthday of Osiris, Adonis, and Dionysus. The newborn Krishna was presented with gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Even Christianity's weekly holy day was stolen from the pagans…Originally, Christianity honored the Jewish Sabbath of Saturday, but Constantine shifted it to coincide with the pagan's veneration day of the sun…To this day, most churchgoers attend services on Sunday morning with no idea that they are there on account of the pagan sun god's weekly tribute: Sun day. In Constantine's day, Rome's official religion was sun worship - the cult of Sol Invictus, or the Invincible Sun - and Constantine was its head priest.

RP 1999: …the bishops hit three birds with one stone: birthday of Constantine, birthday of the Messiah, and celebration of Sol. During the winter solstice in December, when days begin to grow longer, Sol the Sun god was worshipped by pagan peasants in frenzied rituals throughout Rome. It is the shortest day of the year, after which daylight increases a little bit every twenty-four hours. Ancient pagans thought that the Sun thus was reborn each year. The winter solstice marks the approach of spring, bringing renewal of crops and new life. Romans celebrated with green branches cut down in anticipation of the green crops to come. They placed candles on the branches in observance of the lengthening hours of sunlight that come with the spring…The Emperor decreed Sol's weekly festival, Sol-day, to be Sunday, a Sabbath for Christians…Christ's birthday, fixed on December 25, took over the feast day of an earlier favored deity of Constantine, Sol Invictus…December 25 was also…Constantine's birthday. The birth of Christ was originally celebrated along with the visit of the Magi and the Baptism on January 6th. We have evidence for that as early as the end of the second century, beginning of the third century. Others place the birth of Christ as late as April 21st or May 1st. The date of December 25th does not come around until the fourth century…In the fourth century, Church fathers announced that Christ's birthday was December 25, the same date as Constantine's birthday.

DC 2003: Historians still marvel at the brilliance with which Constantine converted the sun-worshipping pagans to Christianity. By fusing pagan symbols, dates, and rituals into the growing Christian tradition, he created a kind of hybrid religion that was acceptable to both parties…the church and its officers became a vital part of the earthly hierarchy, the organization through which people might reach to God. And at the very top of this worldly pyramid of power stood Constantine, the holy emperor.

RP 1999: The Church thus enshrined the Emperor like a proxy god. December 25 also marked the pagan festival of Sol Invictus, the Sun god…The Church disapproved of its members celebrating with pagans, but nothing could stop Christians from joining in the popular holiday festivities of Rome. So, early in the fourth century, Church leaders decided to co-opt the Roman solstice festival by designating December 25 as the Messiah's birthday. They theorized that Christ's conception would have occurred during the spring solstice in March, start of the growing season. Nine months later he was born in December. This logic allowed the Church to subsume the Roman solstice ritual and incorporate it with the Christian religion each December, on Constantine's birthday. The faithful could now celebrate the Holiday ("Holy-day") and also claim the festival ritual as their own.

DC 2003: …Constantine and his male successors successfully converted the world from matriarchal paganism to patriarchal Christianity by waging a campaign of propaganda that demonized the sacred feminine, obliterating the goddess from modern religion forever.

RP 1999: This new Church was defined by a cult of very strange men. Aware that the control of females depended upon the denigration of sex, they suppressed all gospels that told stories of women and gays…These ideals of the Gnostics were suppressed and condemned by dominator men with the same brutality used to wipe out the Goddess religions a thousand years earlier. When Irenaeus and Constantine edited the contents of the Bible, they deleted the best texts and published instead a MANual of lessons in the supremacy of men.

"It's man-made stuff…there's so many broken-down variations…but they're so cheeky, all the time adding in their own bits and pieces."

- Jimi Hendrix

DC 2003: …some of the gospels that Constantine attempted to eradicate managed to survive. The Dead Sea Scrolls were found in the 1950s hidden in a cave near Qumran in the Judean desert. And, of course, the Coptic Scrolls in 1945 at Nag Hammadi. In addition to telling the true Grail story, these documents speak of Christ's ministry in very human terms.

RP 1999: The Dead Sea Scrolls speak of the Sons of God in a plural way…When the long hidden Gnostic gospels were dug up and discovered at Nag Hammadi in Egypt in 1945, the world observed ancient accounts of the Jesus movement - two thousand- year-old writings that praise women and gays.
