Rock Prophecy

Both books feature cryptology plots, secret code machines, and code breaker puzzles.

DC 2003: The science of cryptology to protect information…Six donut-sized discs of marble had been stacked and affixed to one another within a delicate brass framework…tumblers that could be rotated to spell different words…It's called a cryptex…a code-writing scheme…for storing secret information…Five lettered dials…if you align the dials in the proper position, the lock slides apart…and if someone attempted to force open the cryptex, a glass vial would break, and the vinegar would quickly dissolve the papyrus.

RP 1999: A cryptanalyst's dream…their code machine named Enigma was suddenly deciphered by Operation Ultra, a group of code breakers...a cipher machine called the Enigma to put messages into secret form...they were using a new Enigma key, Shark, that was unreadable…on the four-rotor Enigma…little pamphlets, printed in Gothic lettering on pink blotting paper…it was a perfect crib. The smallest exposure to water would have dissolved the ink.

At key moments in the stories, both books portray a founder of Microsoft, with rare documents:

DC 2003: Harvard dropout Bill Gates had returned to his alma mater to lend to the museum one of his priceless acquisitions, 18 sheets of paper he had recently purchased at auction from the Armand Hammar Estate. His winning bid a cool 30.8 million. The author of the pages, Leonardo da Vinci.

RP 1999: The late Jimi Hendrix, a Seattle native, has had more influence on Mr. Allen than perhaps anyone except Mr. Bill Gates…Paul Allen was interested in acquiring ownership of rights to Jimi's music for his museum...a 30-page screenplay by Jimi Hendrix…handwritten pages…at Sothebys in New York during the week prior to the auction…a half million dollars was paid by Mr. Allen's museum for this material…

Both books spin code breaking scenes around arcane mathematical formulas:

DC 2003: …1-1-2-3-5-8-13-21…This is the Fibonacci sequence…a progression in which each term is equal to the sum of the two preceding terms.

RP 1999: When lining up the Hendrix numbers, it quickly becomes apparent that the key is number three - Multiples of Three…notice how sequences progress in triplicate leaps: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, etc.

Both books describe words hidden within words:

DC 2003: This number PHI 1.618 is a very important number in art…[and] the letters in my name...soPHIe…

RP 1999: Astro Man will leave you in pieces. Astro Man means catASTROphe Man.

Both books use famous works of art to conceal secret messages:

DC 2003: I show you Da Vinci's painting of the Holy Grail…The Last Supper…you will be shocked to learn what anomalies Da Vinci included here that most scholars do not see…This fresco…is the entire key to the Holy Grail mystery…

RP 1999: We unearthed the plans Jimi left for Monika's paintings. He'd made her promise that she would use her skills to execute the paintings and drawings that he'd left behind...Later we were to find, while examining the sketches, that all the numbers, all the measurements, were all in nines and sixes, nine inches, six millimeters, six-feet, sixty-nine millimeters, ninety-six inches and so on.

Both books analyze art symbols to decode hidden meanings:

DC 2003: Earth's original prime meridian. The first zero longitude of the world...Paris's ancient Rose Line…ancient Roslin …derived from the Rose Line…the Line of Rose…lineage of Mary Magdalene…The Louvre Pyramid…V-shaped contour of glass. The Chalice…goddess art…blade and chalice guarding o'er her gates…two pyramids pointed at one another…The blade and chalice…fused as one…[into] the Star of David

RP 1999: …a song he had written called If Six Was Nine...Jimi said that these numbers together are a very powerful force, and he drew them within each other. It looked like a spiral when he added more rays, the individual rays as well as the whole form spinning to the right. He said the sign with nine rays in it is the symbol of a very high spiritual power which is coming towards Earth. What Monika didn't understand was that the drawing Jimi fashioned by combining the two numerals, 6 and 9, is a sketch of the asteroid. The drawing appears in her book and the "rays" spiraling out are its illustrious tail burning bright as it enters our atmosphere. At the bottom of his sketch he drew the Earth in the distance, with the Electric Love asteroid approaching through clouds. At the top he placed a long arrow, indicating a collision course straight ahead. Jimi's sketch of the Rock is a composite combination of the figures 6 and 9

Both stories are quests to expose important information that has been covered up by powerful institutions:

DC 2003: Behold…the greatest cover-up in human history. Not only was Jesus Christ married, but He was a father…Mary Magdalene was the Holy Vessel. She was the chalice that bore the royal bloodline of Jesus Christ.

RP 1999: …Irenaeus and his churches destroyed all original manuscripts in order to cover up the changes they made to these stories…we know only what later churches wanted to tell us…you get twelve gospels, one of them tells us that Jesus was gay.

DC 2003: …you must understand the Church's powerful motivations to conduct such a cover-up. They could never have survived public knowledge of a bloodline.

RP 1999: Informing the public that we need to build Star Wars weapons against asteroids is impractical. Panic reactions would accompany denial…we are mounting a halfhearted, feeble, and secret attempt to build anti-asteroid technology, and the government is telling the public that these expenditures are for anti missile systems…a campaign was waged to persuade the public that the craze for asteroids results not from Rock Prophecy...

Both stories cite earlier books upon which their theories are based:

DC 2003: This caused quite a stir back in the 1980s…the authors made some dubious leaps of faith in their analysis, but their fundamental premise is sound, and to their credit, they finally brought the idea of Christ's bloodline into the main-stream...

RP 1999: The Secret of Atlantis must have become quite a subject of discussion in the late 1970s. The book details Muck's theory that an asteroid destroyed Atlantis…Muck's research is impressive and his book is extraordinary…
